I'm not going to dissemble here, but all that spam initially turned me away from ever wanting to consider playing Old School RuneScape. So that I'm now actively considering checking out OSRS just to see what's up, I'm either deep down the rabbit hole of Stockholm Syndrome or maybe I've come around to wondering if the OSRS method of horizontal progression is what WoW Classic+ ought to be.
Knowing how I work, I never do things on impulse, so it's not like I'm going to drop everything and try out OSRS in the next month, but MadSeasonShow's video that dropped yesterday about the differences between WoW Classic/Season of Discovery and OSRS got me thinking about this very thing.
Don't get me wrong; the graphics are something I'd have written in the 1980s, and if you thought that Vanilla WoW had some clunkiness, OSRS makes Vanilla WoW look like the latest Call of Duty game.

The graphics don't bother me that much, but the gameplay might. We'll see, when I go try it out. (Probably 2026, knowing me.)

Heh, I watched that video too! And had a similar thought of "wonder if I should try OSRS some time", though that was quickly quashed considering I barely have enough time for my existing games. (As an aside, I've also come to enjoy MadSeason's content less and less since he made the pivot to full time YouTuber.)
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing for me when it comes to Runescape is that my friend group around 2003 was really into it at the time and tried to get everyone else to play too, but I was in my "if it's popular, I'm automatically sceptical" phase and therefore felt like being contrary. Though to be fair, I also thought it didn't look very interesting when I watched others play over their shoulder. It seems very ironic in hindsight how hard I fell for WoW only a few years later.
MadSeason was at his peak when he did the hour long videos, examining a topic in more detail. His Pandora's Box video was really worth the wait.
DeleteI never knew Runescape at all until I started fielding all of those spam emails, so I then searched out just what the hell the game was. For a while I was getting more Runescape emails than I was "Emerald Nightmare" spam back in the day. But still, what goes around comes around, I suppose.
Still, it's nice to know I'm not the only person who tends to pivot when something gets really popular. I mean, I saw Asmon there in the picture of streamers invested in OSRS and that kind of killed my interest in the same way his playing of FFXIV dampened my interest in the game there.
