A Musical Salute

I spent part of today dropping off the youngest mini-Red at college for her sophomore year.

If you're a long time reader of PC, you'll remember when Souldat and I started this blog, the youngest mini-Red was entering 1st Grade.

My, how they grow up so quickly.

Anyway, on the drive down I was listening to the soundtrack from Wildstar, which brought back all the feels for a world forever left incomplete.

This November will be the 4th anniversary of the demise of Wildstar. Let's raise a glass to those games that have passed on, and how much they meant to us. If you've a game that you miss, let's hear it.

  1. I was super happy with my PC at the time, but when my Cata / MoP guild broke up, most of the good ones went on to WildStar so I did too. Problem was, it required over 3G of RAM, and boards that didn't support 64-bit access were a thing at the time. So that particular software was responsible for my next upgrade at the time. Good thing I got a bonus that year.

    1. Oh boy, I remember our old 32 bit Core Duo back when SWTOR released. I wasn't sure I could even play the game, but much to my surprise it loaded (with substantially reduced graphics). But that wait while it loaded while getting into a Flashpoint, that was brutal. I got used to apologizing to groupmates about the length of time it took to load, and I frequently got expressions of surprise that I was even able to play at all with such a setup.

  2. I would say Vanguard but the emulator is amazing. Then there was Ferentus, another game I remembered fondly even though I only ever played the beta briefly... and now that has an emulator too! Free realms is another I'd like to play again... and the emu for that is on the cusp of release according to their Discord.

In fact, it's harder to think of "vanished" mmorpgs I used to like that don't have emulators than ones that do. Wildstar is one of the very few games of its size and fame that doesn't and it's not really clear why. My own favorite of the games that really have disappeared would be Rubies of Eventide and that's all the more frustrating because it was withdrawn for non-commercial reasons by its private owners.

    1. Exactly how do the emulators work? Do they turn an MMO into a single player experience? I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who used an emulator to play the original SimCity within the past several years.

  3. Oh, thank you! That was so great to hear because I'd say Wildstar would have been it for me had there not been Warcraft.

First grade and now sophomore in college? My daughter said it was weird she now has a "team" instead of just her. She is in charge of person, yike! The speed at which these guys do this is too quick! TotA

    1. Oh, I've been there. Over the years of this blog I moved from being just a grunt into management. And I still have no idea how it happened.
